Girl Band Parade Reveal Their Beauty Secrets

Chatting beauty and makeup to pop stars? I’m sure i used to dream about that as a teenager!

I recently had the opportunity to indulge in beauty talk with the gorgeous ladies from new girl band Parade, who are promoting the launch of Clean & Clear’s Morning Energy range.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect of this new pop outfit, if i am totally honest, i have slightly fallen off the pop music radar. So, although i knew Parade existed, i probably wouldn’t have been able to tell you much about them. However, that is the beauty of google. Armed with much research, i met up with them at a trendy little Hoxton bar, where they were later performing a gig for their fans.

I introduced myself to five charming ladies, fresh from their return at V Festival at the weekend (i thank google for this info). Emily, Lauren, Bianca, Sian and Jessica are on top form. Each with her individual style perfectly executed, from girly and chic to colourful and fun, what’s instantly apparent (and contagious) is their cheery, carefree and spirited attitudes. I watch as they settle on a comfy sofa, and excitedly ponder what to order from the bar menu. Then as they await the arrival of their chips and margarita’s, i tuck into my list of questions.
Sian hastily interrupts. Dressed on trend in red high waisted denim hot pants teamed with a blue leotard underneath, she points out that there’s a good reason why her shorts are unbuttoned. I hadn’t actually noticed, but understood her need to explain “…it gets uncomfortable sometimes when you have high waisted clothes on.”
It’s ok Sian, we won’t judge you! So back to the beauty.
What are your beauty addictions?
Instantly, and in unison the ladies shout “Vaseline”.
Jessica: “It’s really nice on dry lips, but also on cheeks or anywhere”
Sian: “I love the Rose version. It’s sooo nice.”
Bianca: “We have to have face wipes too. We wear so much make up, and are super conscious that we get it all off. We always have face wipes in the car.”

Your biggest beauty disasters?
Emily: “It has to be on a night out when i pull out my lip gloss for a top up and then realise i am applying mascara. That’s bad!!” Yep, that’s a disaster alright!
Jessica: “…oh and fake tan. When you put the tan on before bed, then wake up in the morning with orange palms urggh its a nightmare, and i’ve done that so many times!”
Bianca: “What about when you are wearing false lashes, and having a conversation with someone without realising half of one lash is hanging off your eye – that’s pretty embarrassing!”
Seeing as your new single is named ‘Perfume’, i have to ask – what is your favourite?
Emily: “I know, Viva La Juicy, its sweet. I really like it”
Lauren: “Stella McCartney!”
Bianca: “Pleasures by Estee Lauder, I love all the mumsey perfumes!”
Sian: “I adore Marc Jacobs’ Daisy, and we all really like the Daisy body moisturiser too, it has a bit of shimmer in it.”
Jessica: “It’s definitely Bvlgari Omnia, I’m not good at pronouncing it, but i love wearing it. The bottle looks like a silver clasp.”

At this point i catch sight of Bianca’s multi-coloured nails, all with little faces painted on – so cute, i have to snap!

Cute nails. Love the ring too!

Leading on to my next question
If you had a nail polish made in your honour, what would it look like and be called?
Emily: “I really like textures, so i’d probably go for a marble effect polish.”
Lauren: “Matte nail varnish. Black matte polish would be my choice.”
Bianca: “Ooo I’d have something crazy, like UV glow in the dark yellow polish which is really clubby and good to wear on a fun night out. It would have to be called Sparkling Sunshine
Sian: I’d love my polish to paint multi-coloured straight out of the bottle, a bit like those striped tooth pastes you get. I’d have to call it Rainbow Chic…or Roxy Rainbow.”
Jessica: “I’d just have a bright shiny red. A classic red that doesn’t go dull.” I think Shellac might be the answer to your prayers Jess!
What skincare products do you use?
Jessica & Sian: “We use the Clean & Clear Brightening Face Moisturiser, its really nice and light and has a bit of an illuminating sheen to it
Bianca: “I have quite sensitive skin, the Energising Face Scrub by Clean & Clear works for me.”
Lauren: “I use a french brand called Bioderma, but i can’t always get it in the UK so i also love the Morning Energy Face Wash…”
Emily: “Yeh its got these bubbles in it that are really refreshing!”
Who are your beauty icons?
Jessica: “Kim Kardashian! she always looks pristine. In fact i like all the Kardashian sisters.”
Lauren: “Drew Barrymore, she has a real effortless style.”
Bianca: “I’m really into the old Blondie look, she had a cool and chilled out way about her.”
Sian: “I really love Rhianna.”
Emily: “The Olsen Twins, i really like their look.”

Finally, can you all give me your favourite pose…

A World Exculsive Launch: Tom Ford Beauty Collection

Tom Ford, a brand know for it’s seductive opulence has taken a most welcomed step to launch an entire beauty range. And it’s one to get excited about. Sumptuous black and gold packaging adorns the delicious wardrobe of colour. Tom Ford has no doubt brought sexy back to make up.
The brand new Colour Collection which is dedicated to achieving glamorous colour, launches exclusively to Harrods and Selfridges in London on 3rd September 2011. A world premiere launch even before the USA. We really are honored Mr Ford.

In awe of the products, i worked my way around the collection at the exclusive preview. You will find all the basics of any make up brand; foundation, powders, eyeliners, brushes, even some skincare.

There are eighteen stunning lip colours, some new, while some remain from the original lip collection, but all with that gorgeous creamy formula we love. There are two fragrances which also share the launch, a light musk scent with tones of sandalwood ‘Santal Blush’, and a stronger more floral scent ‘Jasmine Rouge’.

Instantly catching my eye, at the centrepiece of the collection, ten eyeshadow quads. Each carefully crafted by Tom to include shades and textures he believed were required to create a look be it seductive, dramatic or nude.

A Selection of Tom Ford Makeup Brushes
Tom Ford Traceless Foundation & Foundation Stick

Another product that i believe is going to be a winner is the Tom Ford Brow Sculptor. A flat angled calligraphy style pencil to fill in and feather brows, with a brow brush at the other end, and a hidden sharpener tucked into the body. It’s a innovative design and sure to put a smile on many faces.

This is Tom Ford beauty. Its mouth wateringly irresistible, and it’s expensive, but the quality and devotion of the range is perfectly evident.

Epic Bronzer Fail: Jemma Kidd Perfect Tan Bronzing Trio

I’m not sure why or how, but somehow I managed to purchase yet another bronzer, the second in the space of two days (is there bronzer rehab out there!?). Adding to my bronze mountain is the Perfect Tan Bronzing Trio by Jemma Kidd. Lets start with the positive points. I like the black and pink packaging. Its subtle but looks pro. Other than that, this bronzer gets a fail, i don’t like it.

I think the reason i brought Perfect Tan was because i do really rate a lot of the Jemma Kidd range, so thought this would be a good buy. I was wrong.
Although it is a trio of 3 shades to sculpt and bronze with, it just looks far too orange once applied. It is also very sparkly, and to top it off it wouldn’t take to my skin without dipping into the compact about 3 times.

Sparkle city
Orange

These issues might be due to my olive skin tone, and possibley it might work better against fairer skin. Whatever it is, this bronzer is heading to the bottom of my ever-growing bronzer collection.

Bronzer Addiction Continues: NARS Laguna

The bronzer addict in me continues to bloom. So much so in fact that i recently gave up the blusher (was weird at first) and have been donning the mighty bronzer on its lonesome. And i like it. My latest bronzing investment is Laguna by NARS.

I know i’m late on the take up with this one, but i thought i had found the best bronzer ever in the gorgeous little brown compact known as Guerlain Terracotta, not far behind this one is another favourite of mine Benefit’s Hoola.
Anyway back to Laguna.

Its a slightly shimmery one, so if you hate those, you will hate this. I personally think shimmer is key sometimes, it helps achieve a slight glow and perks up those dull days. Just avoid overdoing it, as looking like a disco ball isn’t a great effect.
Laguna is a medium brown terracotta shade, its tiny particles make it super soft and very smooth to wear with a lush silky finish. It suits my olive skin tone well, and i think depending on how it is applied, it could work well on most skins.

This would be a really nice product for summer and holidays, the slight shimmer will help bring out a tan for sure. Also, Laguna would be perfect for evenings out. This doesn’t mean to say i wouldn’t wear it for daytime, i would – but not everyday. I haven’t had it long enough to say if it will become a fave, but so far, the outlook it good. Looking forward to Laguna days ahead!

What Is BB Cream? (No Big Brother has not launched cosmetics)

BB Cream. What is it? Why are beauty editors raving about it? Why is it the biggest selling beauty product in Korea?
Heres the lowdown!
BB Cream (the initials stand for Blemish Balm) is set to be the new generation of make-up/ skin care. Its a moisturiser, primer, foundation sun protection, concealer and skin smoother all in one! Believe it. That IS what it is.

Apparently, originating from Germany, where a dermatologist created an ointment for her skin-peel patients, this cream was said to soothe and protect skin whilst also moisturising. Today the commercialised version of this is ‘BB Cream’ and its a phenomenon in Korea. Way ahead of us in the skincare technology stakes, the Asian make up buying market pretty much swear by these creams.
Giving a flawless natural finish in a single application, covering redness and pores, smoothing out skin while injecting a feed of hydration, plus some additional benefits including anti ageing and brightening properties, the BB Cream trashes the need for separate tubes/ bottles and jars of beautifying products. Is this the ‘all in one’ make up item we have been dreaming about?
Now, slowly making it over to the UK, a few brands are getting set to launch their own BB Creams. So far, i haven’t tried any so cannot say how ‘great’ they actually are. However, i do aim to shop one soon. I am curious as to how this product, which sounds like an absolute miracle, fairs with my constantly changing and sometimes troublesome skin. Can 1 cream fix ALL my problems? Watch this space for BB Cream updates.

Garnier BB Cream Miracle Skin Perfector Light £9.99

Clinique Age Defense BB Cream £19

Estee Lauder Cyber White Brilliant Cells BB Cream £26

Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment

The story behind Ojon was what first drew me to the brand (i love a good story). It’s of one those incredible backstories that only a few experience. Turns out, the products are pretty fabulous too. I have used Ojon Haircare on and off for a few years, after first coming across it on QVC.

a small selection of Ojon products
The range is now somewhat wider and caters for a range of hair types. However, my must have item of the entire range is still the Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment. A delicious golden balm which melts in the palms and smells lusciously nutty. It is derived from the remote rainforest’s of Central America, where the Miskito People have been applying this ‘golden elixir’ to their hair skin for over 500 years.

100% natural, free from water and artificial colour, preservatives and silicones, this treatment has been a godsend for my often dry and damaged hair. Said to improve the condition of hair by 64% after just 1 use – i agree, this is not an exaggeration. My hair is instantly healthier in touch and appearance.

I use my tub of gold in various ways; as an overnight treatment combed in with a little wooden comb supplied, a quick 10 min conditioner at the gym, a tiny weeny amount to calm down frizzy hair days or rubbed into the ends when they are looking a bit rough. I also quite happily moisturise drier parts of my body with this treatment too; elbows and knees.

The range is stocked at QVC and John Lewis. £40 for a 150ml tub this baby isn’t cheap…but it IS incredible and addictive.

Organic and Halal Make Up From Inika

With an astonishingly heartfelt story behind the brand, Inika Make Up is not just about helping women achieve their desired look, but also about empowering us with knowledge of good health and vitality. There are a fair few mineral make up ranges on the market now, but Inika stood out for it is one of the very first few cosmetic brands in the West to be certified as Halal. Halal make up is widely found in countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Middle East, it is good to see it now making its way over to us.

The range includes all the essentials with a wide range of shades, lush pigments and sophisticated black and gold packaging. View the range here.
Inika is also certified as Vegan, Organic and Cruelty Free.

The range is available online or in Whole Food stores.

Minx Launches Ramadan Designs

Fans of Minx nails will know that they have an irresistible portfolio of designs. From animal prints to candy stripes, fishnets to skulls, swirls, dots, strips and everything in between.
This week, to coincide with the start of the Islamic month of Ramadan, Minx have launched some stunning new designs reflecting Islamic and Arabic art.

Many devout Muslims would abstain from nail accessories during this holy month, but i am sure these patterns will generally go down a treat and will be popular to celebrate the festivities at the end of the month.

My Day Training In MINX Nails

This week has been a busy week for training. I wanted to update some of my beauty therapy skills, as its been a while since i tried out anything new. Working mobile, I generally stick to the popular treatments of waxing, lash tinting and nails. However, this week i trained in Sienna X Spray tanning (a post on that later) and MINX and Shellac nails.

Here is a quick lowdown on both:
Shellac: This is a hybrid gel polish, it has zero drying time and is cured under a UV lamp. The main benefits of Shellac (apart from drying time) is that it has a good 14 day life without chips, scratches, dents etc. Obviously this will depend  a lot on your lifestyle, if you are constantly gardening, washing up, bashing your nails then the polish may not last as long. Toes will probably go that full 2 weeks if not longer rather than fingers. There are currently 24 Shellac shades, but i’m sure it won’t be long before this collection grows
Shellac can also be used over gel nail enhancements.

Minx & Trendy: These are not a liquid lacquer application, nope, this new trend is made up of a sold film with a sticky back that applies to the nail. Both Minx and Trendy work the same way; the adhesive back is activated by either an infra-red lamp or a hairdryer. Minx and Trendy nails films can be used on fingers and toes, they come in some stunning metallic shades and funky patterns. Since they last approx 4 weeks on toes and 10 days on nails – they are perfect for holidays.

Minx has some really fun designs to try out

I found the Trendy films more difficult to work with compared to the Minx films. Trendy are thicker and so don’t stretch as well, making them less pliable. However my lovely tutor Bev ensured me that with experience, Trendy is just as good to use as Minx.
I was probably most excited about learning the Minx & Trendy applications, but actually Shellac was equally as interesting. Obviously, with the wide range of designs Minx offers, i think i will probably have a lot more fun with it. Minx has quite a popular celebrity following; Rhianna, Beyonce and Lady Gaga are just a few.

Here are the results of my training. For a first attempt i think they are quite good, but practice makes perfect, and then i will be out Minx-ing and Shellac-ing the planet. I will post up more designs as i continue to try these out on friends and clients.

An Instant Manicure with Nailease Strips

I have been fascinated with the new trend of stick on nails, not only because of their staying power (many claim 10 days without chipping) but also because they are easy to apply with not even a mili-second of drying time.
Minx are probably the most well know and the original instant manicure. However i recently tried out a cute little kit from Nailease – and so far am rather impressed.
The Nailease polish sticker strips are made from real nail varnish and also have a pre varnished top coat ensuring a glossy finish. The kit comes with 20 strips, a buffer and a cuticle stick.

I was a bit sceptical about applying the strips when i first saw them, i simply couldn’t imagine how the pre-cut stickers, which come in a variation of sizes would fit my nail bed comfortably.
I proceeded to try them out on my fingers, and surprisingly it literally took me only 10 minutes to do. It felt amazing that i didn’t have to sit like a statue, hands out in front of me, frightened to make a move in case of a disastrous bash and smudge. Nope, I could eat/ type/ text/ and unfortunately even do the washing right away. A-MA-ZING!

The trickiest part to applying the kit was actually lining up the strips with the cuticle. Once you have applied a couple, you get into the swing of it though.

Once on the nail,  i carefully used my thumb to push out the wrinkles and then filled off the excess sticker to tidy the edges. I had to practice caution here, as a dodgy move could cause a snag and ruin the top ends. I had a couple of tiny wrinkles remain on a few edges, nothing too noticeable and it be lack of experience that caused them. That’s it, voila – manicure done.

The finish look is exactly like glossy polish, not a fake plastic appearance as i imagined. The only thing i question is whether it is possible to get 10 days out of this manicure. Mine lasted just under a week before the edges started peeling away. So, in terms of longevity it was pretty similar to a normal manicure.
The simple fact that theses strips are SO easy to apply, and come in a variety of colours and designs would absolutely encourage me to use them again. They are perfect to take away on travels, or quicky brighten up a look.

Nailease instant manicures are available in 20 shades and trends including the French Mani – which i would love to try out too! £5.99 & £6.99 depending on the shade. Available at Harvey Nichols and Boots.

Please note, my trial of Nailease was with a PR sample.
