When My Big Sis Got Wed…

My big sister got married recently. It was an intimate affair which stayed close to Islamic customs. It was also a fabulous opportunity to dress up and get glam.
An evening of henna and cakes
Islamic tradition sees the bride gather with her close female friends and family for an evening of fun before her wedding day – the Henna Night. Here the bride and the her friends have beautiful henna patterns cover theirs hands and feet as a sign of beauty. My sister had quite a lavish design, the rest of us kept it simple.

mmm delicious cakes made my other talented sister

The Islamic Ceremony
My sister had her hair and make up done professionally while the rest of us chose to do our own. MUA Zeenat created a look to suit my sister while keeping strong the Arabic influences. Unlike western weddings, the eye make up is heavy and colours are strong.
The ceremony took place in a stunning Turkish mosque, followed by an evening reception dinner nearby.

Julie and I indulge in dessert
the happy couple share a giggle
the boys having a bromance moment
i loved my bangles
the groom and his mom

The Cheeky Tradition…
…and an opportunity to have a laugh. Tradition has it that the single sisters and friends of the bride should sneak into the marital suite and add to it a touch of fun/ romance/ naughtiness. I gained access to the wedding suite with Shahena and Julie and we made sure the newly weds would return to something amazing. I won’t divulge anymore xoxo

Magnetic Nails Are Taking Off

Not an entirely new concept, but about to make a bit of a come back – Magnetic Nails. Quite a few large brands have ranges launching this summer. These make a nice alternative to plain nails, adding a slight twist without the design overload. The polishes below are from LCN, available in 8 shades at £8,65 each.

The technology in the polish works a bit like the old ‘iron filings’ i remember playing with in science class. Just in case you were interested (I found it quite fascinating), there is something in the polish that reacts with the magnet lifting up these patterns!

It’s simple to use, apply the polish, wave the shaped magnet over the top and you have some pretty interesting looking nails!

Maybe I Might Give These A Go….

….Scented nail polishes from Revlon. These 3 new Limited Edition shades look pretty lush, and perfect to match the current colour blocking fashion. I think it would be quite fabulous to use all these colours on alternate nails to create a colour blocked effect nail trend!

Limited Edition Scented Polish in Mad About Mango
Limited Edition Scented Polish in Beach
(can’t say i know what ‘beach’ smells like though)

Jameela Jamil: Face Of Nails Inc

I can’t say i have ever taken much of an interest in Ms Jamil, but i am loving these new colours she is sporting for Nails Inc.
Part of the Summer 2011 and Autumn 2011 Collections, the shades are classic, cool and fun.
Charing Cross, a lush classic red – Autumn/ Winter Collection 2011

Multi-Colour Summer Brights – I Can Paint A Rainbow Set (£25) with Farringdon Gold Crackle on the ring fingers.

Look out for the Christmas Collection later in the year too, a stunningly luxe nude shade ‘Chelsea Embankment’ will have you bursting with love and butterflies.

Cheryl Cole Does Blonde

It’s the first thing you do when life is not going too well and you want to make a change, or even a comeback. A new hair do. Is this Cheryl’s comeback barnet? A shade of Blonde.

I love Cherly as a Brunette, and think that’s what suits her best, but lets be honest, she can pretty much pull off anything ♥

My Sunshine Team

Temperatures in London were seriously cranked up yesterday, so much so that i almost wanted some rain! Anyway, I’m completely a ‘sun safe’ girl – some may say i take it to the extreme. Here is my ‘sunshine team’ of must haves to protect me from the blazing heat.
…oh and i think that rain i wanted, is literally about to tip down right now!

Piz Buin In Sun: Ultra Light Spray spf 50+: This has quickly been added to my faves list, mainly because i always go for a high factor sun cream and this one is so light and easy to apply. There is no stickiness or greasiness – which is normally the case with higher protection lotions. Admitedly the ‘spray’ part isn’t as good as some spray lotions, but i can live with that as the actual cream is really nice to use (£14.99)*

Piz Buin Self Tan: For legs: My legs always seem to be a touch paler than the rest of me, probably due to wearing opaque tights for 90% of the year. This is a perfect solution. I use the version for darker skins and achieved a lovely bronze colour. The can does take a bit of getting used to, the 360degree spray mechanism means it squirts out in quite an odd fashion, that said, it definitely does reach difficult places like the backs of thighs. I got dressed straight after using this, which is another plus point – no hanging around waiting for the solution to dry. Although the product says colour develops after 1hour, I saw a change a few hours later, and more so the next morning. (approx £8)

Kiehls Ultra Light Moisturiser 50+spf: I first used this broad spectrum UV protection last summer, and found it amazing. It can be worn as an addition to moisturiser. or alone as a moisturiser. Its light and quickly absorbs into the skin (perfect for oily skin). There is no thick greasiness which is a major off putter for me when it comes to face and body sun protection. Also, it is amazingly high in spf. (£26)

Gariner Ambre Solaire Kids Rapido Sun Protection High 50+: I know its for kids, but it doesn’t mean adults can’t use it. The light texture is non greasy, it sprays and spreads easily, its perfect on the go and really handy as a handbag must have. The fact it is a spray can means its not at all messy too (approx £16)

*Superdrug currently have an offer on Piz Buin products, so stock up!

Cap Ferrat – Eyeshadow Trio of sea blues and greens (Limited Edition) £33

Wonder (a shiny sheer orange lipgloss with pink shimmer) and Bolero ( a pink cantaloupe lip pencil) £17.50

Carthage (a hot pink matte lipstick) and Mayflower (a Limited Edition raspberry shimmering lipstick) £18.50 and 17.50

New Order – a soft pink blush with silver shimmer £20.50

Festival Fever: Fashion and Face

Its festival time and that means dressing for the occasion!
Here are some of my beauty and style ideas to see your through those fun filled festival days:
Festival Face:
Max Factor Smokey Eye Effect Eyeshadows come in a Skittles assortment of colours. They are SO easy to apply and can be used to create endless looks. Add some black liner, and top it of with a sprinkling off gold glitter a la Lilly Allen for the ultimate festival face.

Nails Inc have a gorgeous limited edition collection of 6 vibrant summer shades (I Can Paint A Rainbow). My fave is ‘Summer Place’ – a lush yellow sorbet shade. Be a real festival queen by painting each nail in a different shade, as i have here

If you are at an overnight festival, it’s no excuse not to remove your make up. It won’t take long, so just do it! Olay Gentle Cleansing Wipes, remove festival dirt, grime and make up incl waterproof mascara. Easy.

Festival Fashion:
Sunglasses are a must, but don’t take your most expensive pair – you may never see them again. These Topshop Aviators £16, look good and are value for money.
I adore this yellow rain mac from ASOS, £50. So cute.
Festival Hair:
Batiste dry shampoo is a festival winner. I always use the one for brunettes, it works a treat.
Flowers to decorate hair are a big trend at the moment. Add a few to szush up tresses. H&M have some gorge flower hair accessories.
My festival hair style has GOT to be this (below). Its so simple. I took a small section of hair from the underneath by my ear, plaited it and then took it across my forehead. I pinned it with a rose accessory. Voila.

Finally….
….Estee Lauder Stress Relief Eye Masks are perfect for the journey home. When you are feeling slightly worse for wear, pop them on your eyes and relax. You will feel fab by the time you get home!

Style Scrutiny: Essex vs Chelsea

Love it, hate, watch it, avoid it….there is no denying that most of us will have an opinion. If you haven’t caught a glimpse of ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ (TOWIE) or ‘Made In Chelsea’ (MIC) you have either been living in a cave or tried extremely hard to ‘miss’ it.

The endless conversations around how ‘real’ the TOWIE and MIC characters are will no doubt continue, but for me, there is one thing that stands out a mile – the very contrasting take on style, appearance and glamour.

The charming ladies from Essex wouldn’t be seen dead without those super long fake lashes, volumising hair extensions and a lethal tan, whereas the Chelsea girls are a little more understated in their grooming style. Their tans, if they have one come from a weekend in St Tropez, rather than a bottle of it. Hair has an effortless look, and although make up is most definitely worn, it’s just a touch more refined.
I took some screen grabs from both programmes to show the visible difference in style and make up during their everyday activities. Its quite fascinating.

At work

MIC vs TOWIE: Millie working as a MUA and Amy at her beauty salon.
Millie wins

 At Lunch

MIC vs TOWIE: Rosie from MIC is out with friends for lunch as are Billie and Sam
Billie and Sam win
With Friends

MIC vs TOWIE: A lunch with friends (Caggie & Lucy)
Caggie wins. Lucy looks way to orange.

Looking lovely

MIC vs TOWIE: Millie dolled up for a date, and Lauren look rather glam while cleaning the kitchen
Draw – they both look nice (although i’d never bother to glam up to wash dishes)
I imagine this is what a MIC and TOWIE girl’s ‘must have’ list would read like:

On the whole, both the Chelsea and Essex clans practice glam, however their interpretation of it is utterly different. I do think there is one Chelsea lady who might actually feel quite at home in Essex…

…Gabby, looking rather TOWIE.

Gabby, out for some drinks the Chelsea way?

Worth A Try…

The Body Shop’s Honey Bronze Dry Shimmering Oil.
I am a sucker for these shimmering oils and have been a devotee of the Nuxe version for years. To be perfectly honest, i haven’t been excited about much from The Body Shop since i was 15years old and formed and unhealthy addiction to their Vanilla Musk perfume (which i have thankfully overcome now). However, The Body Shop have done good with this oil, it gives a really lovely bronze colour with a hint of shimmer and no grease. The scent is however very (and i mean VERY) strong – you will either love or hate. It reminds me of a Jo Malone perfume i wore one holiday – so brought back fun memories for me.

There is infact an entire Honey Bronze make-up range also available at The Body Shop that is well worth checking out.

Kissing With Tom Ford

Well, with my new Tom Ford lippy to be precise. A rather extravagant spend at £35, but am adoring it all the same. The shade is Pink Dusk, and as with all the TF lipsticks, it applies lusciously and smoothly. The creamy texture moisturises without any dry skin being highlighted (always a faux pas).

Pink Dusk is a natural light pink shade, perfect for everyday, and works great with the growing nude/ natural make up trends.

Goes without saying, the packaging is stunning. Understated luxe.

However, it appears that Mr. Ford is revamping his lippy collection, and early autumn will see new (possibly gold) packaging along with new shades. Seven of the existing lipstick colours will also get the chop (not Pink Dusk though), so if you have a current fave, pop over to Tom Ford and stock up ladies!

Bare Minerals Pure Transformation Night Treatment: To Bed With Flawless Skin

The new Bare Minerals skincare range is growing on me. I had a bit of a tricky start with it, mostly due to using products that were not for my skin type – but because i have always loved BM make up, i persevered and tried a few more different products. And boy am i glad.

The Pure Transformation Night Treatment has got to to be a flippin fabulous invention (if you can call it that). Its groundbreaking, its different and i adore it. It has many qualities which i happily discuss below. However, i can’t hold back any longer without stating my favourite aspect, and the one thing that no other night treatment can give me – instantaneously flawless skin. YES its true – more about this later, but all i can say is, no more hiding from boyfriends when the make up comes off at night!! Whoop!!
Unlike your usual night treatments this little pot from Bare Minerals doesn’t contain a cream, a serum or even a liquid to apply before bed. No. It contains power, what else.
The idea behind this treatment, which is made of 100%  RareMinerals ActiveSoil Complex (a combined concoction of nutrients and minerals found in soil), is that while you sleep the treatment feeds your skin with mighty minerals essential to the look and health of your skin.

Well nothing novel about this, most night treatments claim the same, however, the difference here is the level of nutrients penetrating the skin is much higher, and more potent. With regular use, it aims to replenish skin for a smoother more even tone, along with reducing pores and increasing firmness. I have seen my skin change in texture over the last 2 months, pore sizes are visible reduced and overall my skin is smoother.
Applied to the skin in gentle circular motions with the buffing brush (which is neatly placed on the inside lid), the treatment goes on daily after nightcream. The powder has a soft texture, and the particles are tiny. The finish is smooth, with imperfections diffused. The tightly packed bristles, although super soft, do require a bit of getting used to. It’s a fairly large brush – as big as one cheek, and not the most flexible. It was the only negative, but i can deal with it.

Ok, so back to the instantly flawless skin. This night treatment is available in four shades; clear, light, medium and tan. I use the medium, and on application, imperfections are magnificently smoothed away. Its amazing, like wearing make up to bed AND it’s fabulous for your skin. I feel much more confident – flawless skin before bed and first thing in the morning. A girls dream come true.

applied to my inside wrist, can just about see the illuminating properties.

Made In Chelsea BOY Shares His Make Up Tips

Made In Chelsea, if you didn’t tune in to this new E4 reality show based around the Sloane’s that hang out on London’s King’s Road, then no doubt you have heard about it at least. They say its the “posh version of The Only Way Is Essex“. Maybe it is. However, there is one thing you won’t catch Mark, Kirk, Arg and co. (bar Harry) doing – and that is dabbing on some concealer here, and some bronzer there, curling lashes and fretting about volumised hair*. Welcome to the world of Ollie Locke, the MIC man who doesn’t leave the house without a tan (ok, so he has that part in common with the TOWIE’s).

To be honest, i haven’t ever heard a man outside of a hair salon talk about volume…unless its the sound type, so when Ollie was stressing to his gf about the fact that his long, luscious brown locks are in need of a boost, and his skin was looking less than pristine, i was slightly taken aback. I am more than aware that men like to dabble in a tad more grooming these days, and i’m so up for that. However, i’m not sure how i would feel about my boy battling me for the mirror each morning to apply HIS MAKE UP!!
I think i prefer a dash of a roughness. I’d be ok with the tan and the moisturiser…not sold on the rest. Or am I just worried he will look better than me?!
Heres is a little E4 video i came across, Ollie’s make up tips for boys
*Apart from Joey Essex, and his obsession with poofed up ream hair.

Cheryl Cole’s US X-Factor Hair

So, Cheryl Cole was confirmed as a judge on the US X-Factor last week. Good job, I thought she was close to topping herself if she didn’t get the part!

As the first round of auditions took off, looks like Chery’s hair did too. What do you think of this BIG hair she is sporting? I’m undecided for the moment. As for the make up, she has stuck with her standard dark eyes and lashings of khol. Can’t deny it, she looks good!

Crest Teeth Whitening Strips – Did They Work?

In my continuing mission to obtain whiter than white pearly whites, i invested in some Crest Teeth Whitening Strips. I opted for the ‘Professional Effects’ type, although there are a couple of different options.

Admittedly, i was a tad dubious as to what sort of results could be achieved with these teeth strips. Come on. Honestly? Could some strips of plastic really give me the red carpet smile i lusted after? Hmmm, well i was most definitely up for finding out. Apparently, whiter teeth could be seen within 3 days, with full results in 20.

I received a bunch of 40 ‘enamel safe’ sachets, each one containing a strip for the top and the bottom set of teeth.
I used these strips for 19 days (one sachet was a bit dodgy), usually twice a day.

Teeth Before

Once peeled off the backing tape, each strip was applied to my teeth. The sticky side is prepared with a thin layer of peroxide gel, sounds scary, but it actually tasted quite delicious and minty. While they were on, the strips felt secure and didn’t bother me at all. I left them on for 30mins at a time as instructed. I do confess, on a few occasions i went over the recommended time hoping for faster results. The only down side was that i couldn’t eat or drink while wearing the strips – its probably the longest time my body had to go without food!

The gel strips. Shorter strip for the bottom teeth, longer for the top set

I thought these strips would be a pain to fit into my daily routine, but actually i would watch an episode of Kardashians or TOWIE and it was job done!

Wearing the Crest Whitening Strips

Straight after each use, when the strips were peeled of, my teeth were pinging white, it was fabulous! Sadly, this did seem to ware off.

After about a week, my teeth looked cleaner and less stained. Although i don’t smoke, i am a big tea and coffee fan – which can really leave a ghastly yellow tone to teeth, resulting in me with my hand over my mouth every time i ever wanted to laugh (ok, i exaggerate slightly).
I have now finished my course of strips, and am about 75% please. My smile is cleaner, and more radiant, but its not Hollywood dazzling – which is what i really want. I think only professional whitening will achieve this though.

Before pics of my teeth…again
…and the results after 19 days of treatment look like this:
After results. I tried to keep the lighting and smile as similar to the before picture
I would definitely recommend this treatment, its easy, effective and can be done every 6 months if desired. I didn’t suffer from any sensitivity, and found the whole experience quite exciting really. I will continue using the strips until i finally go in for the professional option.

Make Up Trend Alert: Back To Natural?

I may be jumping the gun a bit here, but i feel like make up trends are slightly shifting away from bold statement looks to a more natural, fresh faced style. Less of the false lashes possibly?
I personally would welcome this shift. There is no denying that i love make up. I love to wear it, love to play with it, LOVE to shop for it, and most definitely love to spend hours talking about it. However,  i always come back to a fairly natural application, some emphasis on eyes or lips but in a subtle fashion.
Many (not all), of the models at the A/W2011 fashion shows were sporting fresher, nuder faces. Could this be a clue to what is to come of make up trends? Also, with the newly crowned Princess Catherine opting for an understated face at the royal wedding last week, it may well be a look we will see take over as the world tries to emulate her princess style.
Natural and fresher faces graced the catwalks in London and New York:
